The Doolin Céilí Band: From Doolin, County Clare, Ireland
The Doolin Ceili Band was formed by the legendary flute player Christy Barry in 2010. Christy recently was honoured with the Doolin Lifetime Achievement Award at the Doolin Folk Festival. Christy Barry is well known for his compositions of the Burren reels and jigs. The band's core members are all local North Clare musicians who play in this area famous for its music tradition. Doolin is as famous for traditional music as New Orleans is to Jazz and Blues. The band are very lucky to have so many great musicians who play pub sessions, dance halls and festivals around County Clare and throughout Ireland. The Band focus on the old authentic traditional music which means a lot to the band. Music has been handed down generation after generations all over North Clare. Adopting the style of music that the Band play requires a lot of knowledge of the Doolin and surrounding areas. People who play it best have lived in this area for some time. The members of the Band have duets and trios together and entertain visitors to Doolin and also perform concerts throughout Europe. When the Band play together, everybody knows each other’s music style and rhythm and phrasing comes easy to the group. Music is in the blood!
The members are famous solo musicians and are highly regarded in Ireland and around the world. They are all well known in the Traditional Circle. Sometimes different musicians play in the band, but it doesn’t affect the unique sound that the Doolin Ceili Band accomplishes. Core band members are Christy Barry (Flute, Whistle, Spoons), Terry Bingham (concertina), James Devitt (Fiddle), Kevin Griffin (Banjo), and Colin Nea (Accordion).
